Learning module 1: Introduction
Guiding questions:
- What does it mean to take a systems approach? What is meant by food, land and water systems?
- What are synergies and trade-offs in food, land and water systems?
- What is multifunctional agriculture?
- Why is it relevant to learn about this?
Here we introduce the concepts of systems thinking, as well as what we mean when we refer to synergies and trade-offs. Learn about trends in global and local agendas and gain perspective on current research around synergies and trade-offs in food and agricultural systems. In the presentations you are introduced to the concepts of bioeconomy and biodiversity to address the synergies and trade-offs between human development and conservation. In the Looking Ahead essay and the Case Study you find examples of what it means to harness synergies among global environmental agendas via nature-based approaches and sustainable intensification measures.
